Melissa’s Blog: Goldilocks- Just right!
April 24th, 2009
All that needs to be said right now is the number 25. As in 25 more days until I get some good-looking breasts! I’m certainly getting excited. Nervous, not so much, because I know that I am in good hands with Dr. Bashioum. But I am definitely eager. I’m eager to see the way clothes will look on me. I have lots of questions about the final result and I am very interested in seeing whether I made the right decisions. Was saline the better for me over silicone? When the enlargement is completed, how does it feel? Did I choose the right size? Did I go too big or not big enough? I just simply cannot wait and wish the day were here already.
One of the toughest things I had to decide was what size I wanted to be. This may be easy for some people, but this was definitely not easy for me. I am a slight perfectionist and well, I only want to do this once, so I certainly wanted to be happy with the size I chose. I want to be able to say, “I didn’t go too big. I didn’t go too small, but rather like Golidlocks- just right! And no one can tell that I’ve had a breast augmentation.” In order to do that, I need to take a few things into account. The first this is my body stature. I’m 5’6″ and weigh 115 pounds. I want to chose a size that would balance well with my figure. I started with the largest sizing implants for consideration, which was 400cc. Boy did that make my husband and I laugh. In fact, we smiled the entire time I was trying on my “sizers.” With each sample size I tried on, I wore one of my favorite shirts. I even grabbed a swimsuit top when I thought we were getting close to deciding and we eventually did. We came to the conclusion that 275cc would be ideal for me, after taking my body frame into consideration and the fact that I am really active. I find enjoyment in running, working out and need to remember that my body has been use to these activities with a small chest, an A cup to be exact. But before I decided to go with 275, I took one last viewpoint into consideration. Dr. Bashioum tells patients that a significant number of his patients wished they were larger after their augmentation.
(Read Dr. Bashioum’s Fill ‘er Up blog on 4/09/09 about implant size)
With that being said, 300cc… that’s my Final Answer.
Hay Bales
April 21st, 2009
A farmer’s wife came into my office for a breast reduction, shortly after I started my practice. We discussed the surgery, its benefits, and the possible complications. She had the surgery with a near perfect result upon examination at her appointment one week following surgery. She returned for another aftercare visit two weeks later complaining of pain, soreness and swelling. The examination verified this. It really surprised me since she was doing so well at one week. I asked her what she had been doing at home. She told me she and her husband had been bailing hay during the past week. She had spent the entire day lifting and throwing 100lb bales onto the trailerand in the barn! I told her that the resulting symptoms were because of this extreme activity. I strongly suggested she not do this again until her breasts were healed completely at six weeks after surgery. Thank goodness she did not have serious bleeding! and only minor complications.
Surgeons formulate after care instructions in an effort to reduce your risk of discomfort, complications and poor results. The instructions are not merely suggestions, but they are important guidelines that are based on experience, training and regional differences. None of us, except for my wife, are perfect. (I had to say that in the likelihood that she’ll be reading.) However, it is really important to be a perfectionist in this particular incidence when following aftercare instructions. Funny enough, to this day my aftercare instructions that I give patients specifically state you should not throw hay bails for six weeks after surgery! It usually raises a more than a few eyebrows.
