Vampire Facial Media Hype

March 13th, 2013

â€œVampire Facial”   or blood facial is just another attempt for media hype behind clever marketing of an anti-aging quick fix.   The phony procedure is based on real stem cell rejuvenation, but it is likely that all the blood is staged to create media buzz for the Kardashians.   Unfortunately this strategy has proven to be successful to keep celebrities in the news and money in their pockets.   It is certainly ill-advised for a pregnant woman to have such a procedure because of possible health risks, so I question the wisdom of such a stunt.

Designer Noses: Make Mine Like…

February 4th, 2013

The popularity of celebrity is nothing new. Fashion and beauty trends are in the business of capitalizing on popular culture. Americans are no less susceptible to this pattern of influence. The Kate Middleton nose is now tops on the list of most wanted look-a-likes.

According to Professor of Psychology at New York University, Denis Pelli, media and pop culture can change how the world perceives beauty. “We think of beauty as fixed to an image, universally, for all time. But when Kate Middleton became a royal princess, this enhanced her visibility and, in turn, changed our notions of beauty, that now other women now want to look like her.”

I agree, because during initial consultations, patients often bring in a celebrity photo to show me what they want to look like after cosmetic surgery.   While many aspects of cosmetic surgery rely on proportion, bone structure and symmetry of the patient, having a photo is useful for me to understand a patient’s expectations.
