Summer Accessories: Breast Enlargement
February 15th, 2011
Breast augmentation or breast enlargement surgery continues to be the most requested elective cosmetic surgery in the U.S. According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 310,000 augmentations were performed in 2009 with a reported 10% increase for 2010.
To continue with my discussion of the seasonality of cosmetic surgery, summertime seems to be a popular time for breast enlargements. This is often part of the Mommy Make-over. I typically see an increase in appointments for consultations to discuss enlargements when the weather turns warm.
The most common concern among patients for this surgery is the question of implant size. My patients often schedule follow-up appointments to try-on “sizers†to help them decide on the appropriate size that feels right for them. Our staff is well trained to assist in this process. Melissa’s Blog illustrates this particular dilemma and in one of her posts, she talks about trying to decide on her implant size before surgery. As she mentions, I believe in having my patients make this rather personal decision. To read Melissa’s Blog, click here. We have also posted short film clips of her surgery and discussions about her experience after surgery. “Restoring Jennifer” is a poignant documentary film about a young mom wanting to restore her figure after physical changes resulting from childbirth.
Editor’s Note: So Hollywood

I was in Los Angeles recently and I had an interesting stop light encounter. A woman pulled up next to me and remarked on my license plate and asked if I was with the TV series Nip/Tuck. I said no, but my husband is a plastic surgeon and without missing a beat, she hurled several questions at me. Does laser really work, how about lipo, should she have her eyes “done Well, Ralph is accustomed to having people corner him at social events for impromptu consultations, but this was definitely the first red light drive by one!
I simply reminded her that it was my husband who was the doctor and wished her well in her beauty pursuit. The incident put a smile on my face for the rest of the day! Only in Hollywood.
