Nausea After Surgery
Nausea or feeling sick to ones stomach is common after any kind of surgery. The nausea alone does not pose a problem, and prescription medication is available to control it. However, if it persists and is left untreated, nausea can lead to vomiting. It is the vomiting which increases the pressure within facial blood vessels that is the problem. Patients having facial plastic surgery need to be particularly aware and alert their physician if nausea persists. The strain of vomiting can increase local vessel blood pressure, which disrupts the healing of small blood vessels after surgery. This strain may result in clot disruption causing bleeding, leading to extra swelling and bruising. I advise my patients to call me for immediate evaluation if this occurs.
