How Do I Choose a Cosmetic Surgeon?

Tips From Board Certified Minneapolis Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Ralph W Bashioum

Choosing a cosmetic surgeon can be a difficult decision to make, as this choice will have a huge impact your life. Not only that, but checking the credentials and certifications of cosmetic surgeons has become exceedingly complex for patients. Here at Bashioum Cosmetic Surgery Center in Wayzata, MN, we offer numerous cosmetic treatments to patients from all over Minneapolis and St. Paul area. Furthermore, we firmly believe in looking out for our patients’ best interest, which is why below we will discuss the issues surrounding finding a cosmetic surgeon and how to navigate this information minefield.

Why Is It Difficult to Find a Surgeon?

Finding a surgeon can be difficult for several reasons. For starters, surgery can be quite stressful. Every surgery is a costly, in-depth process that will make a large difference in your life. Regardless of the type of surgery you are pursuing, the process may have a significant impact on your life. Due to this fact, many patients can become stressed trying to find the best surgeon possible.

Another reason why it is difficult to find a good plastic surgeon is due to the high volume of surgeons available. Even if they do not specialize in cosmetic surgery, board-certified physicians from a variety of training backgrounds can perform cosmetic surgery, including:

  • Gynecologists
  • Family physicians
  • Plastic surgeons
  • Ear, nose and throat surgeons
  • General surgeons
  • Dermatologists
  • Ophthalmologists
  • Psychiatrists

Every one of these doctors can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon because state laws permit this. It is because of this overload in options that people often find a tough time trying to obtain a specialized cosmetic surgeon. With all that said, how is one supposed to filter through all information and decide on a cosmetic surgeon who is right for them?

Tips for finding Qualified Surgeons

Dr. Bashioum suggests the following ways to find a qualified cosmetic surgeon. First and foremost, make sure they are board certified in plastic surgery. This is a simple qualification to check as you simply go to The American Board of Plastic Surgery  and enter the name in the search field to find their certification. A page will appear letting you know whether or not they are a valid surgeon. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a respected national organization with no hidden agenda. I am proud to say that I am a member.

Secondly, ask your friends and family for names of plastic surgeons they know, as they may have had cosmetic surgery themselves. Recommendations go a long way and will help you to determine if their doctor is also right for you.  Before and after photos often help you gage the results and skill of the surgeon.

Another resource is to ask your primary care physician for referrals. They have the opportunity to evaluate the results of cosmetic surgeons based on the experience of their patients. After that, be sure to make appointments with at least three surgeons. Select the physician that you respect and trust the most. Do not make your selection based on price alone.
