Don’t try this at home!

May 26th, 2010

Bemidji, Minn  â€”   A Minnesota mother has given birth to a baby boy while driving herself to the hospital.

According to The Bemidji Pioneer (photo) 29-year-old Amanda McBride was rushing to the hospital Wednesday when suddenly her water broke.

“And then the baby just came right out,” she said. “I was just sitting on the seat and he just slid out.”

The baby boy was born at 12:20 a.m.  He weighed 8 pounds and was 18.5 inches long.   Officials at North Country Regional Hospital say they were stunned to learn that the expectant mother was driving on her way to the hospital.  Both baby and new mother are doing fine.

Woman Burned at Hospital

April 6th, 2010

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Connie Plumlee, a breast cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy two years ago, was having reconstruction surgery at Saint John Medical Center, when a fire broke out in the operating room, severely burning her face.

So how common is this?  In a recent study it is estimated that surgical flash fires occur approximately 50 to 200 times per year in the United States., according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists. They are all totally preventable.

A failure to follow proper surgical prep technique and careless attention is most often to blame.  My advice is to check on proper accreditation of both the doctor and the surgical facility before surgery.
