Michelle’s Breast Reduction Diary: Surgeon Notes

Dr. Mahsa Moghaddam writes:  Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is the reshaping of the breast by removing excess skin, glandular tissue and breast fat to achieve a breast size in proportion to a woman’s body and to alleviate symptoms associated with overly large breasts.

The decision to have breast reduction surgery is intensely personal. Childbearing, weight gain and weight loss are three events in a woman’s life that can have a significant impact on the size and shape of the breasts. Michelle’s symptoms are shared my many women who choose to have this procedure because of neck and back pain, headaches, shoulder grooving with painful indentations in the skin (secondary to support garments), irritation of the skin fold below the breasts and numbness in the hands and fingers.

Breast reduction surgery in our office is completed under general anesthesia. Michelle will be asleep during the procedure and she will remember little or nothing of the experience. The surgery is performed through incisions on the breast. These are in the shape of an anchor located around the nipple, straight down to the fold beneath the breast and in the fold itself. The scars are inconspicuous and easily covered with clothing. The surgery takes 2-3 hours to complete.   Michelle will spend a total of 5-6 hours in our office prior to returning home. There are no sutures or drain tubes to be removed. We commend Michelle for choosing a healthier lifestyle and we are delighted that she has chosen us to help her achieve a more proportionate figure to complement her sense of well-being.

Downtime from breast reduction surgery can be anywhere from a few days to three weeks based on your occupation. Most women can return to work after one week; however we do ask you not to lift anything heavier than 5 pounds for three weeks after surgery. Complete healing takes six months to a year. For this reason, you will not see the final result of your surgery for six months. The results of breast reduction surgery will be long-lasting. Michelle’s new breast size should help relieve her from the pain and physical limitations experienced prior to breast reduction. Her new figure will likely enhance her self-image and boost her self-confidence.

Next time: Michelle talks about recovery and healing.
